As a quality British engineering business, Fluidlink Hydraulics invests heavily in its machinery, software, skills and technology and operates a 100% testing protocol. The vast majority of its customers use Fluidlink for the design, manufacture and build service it offers to OEM clients. However, its partnership with Hydraulics Online brings some more unusual and technically challenging custom hydraulics work its way.
Custom Hydraulics – Engineering Bespoke Solutions
Fluidlink Hydraulic’s Operations & Technical Manager, Martin Belbin, says: “Hydraulics Online are always different. We’ve manufactured a bespoke power pack for the hydraulic systems to lift a 400kg marble kitchen worktop. We’ve even manufactured a system to control the nose on Concorde. Because we have manufacturing capability here, we can be very flexible and make very small quantities and one-offs if required.”
The businesses have been working closely together since 2006 and Martin says the two companies complement each other well.
“The power packs we manufacture are only one component in a hydraulic solution. You also need cylinders, motors, hoses, and the control gear. Not only does Hydraulics Online have very good relationships with the distributors of these other components, they also have the product knowledge that goes along with them.”
“They can take our designs and say ‘if we put it with this component, it will work in that application’. It means we can work together to develop an optimal custom hydraulics solution. Hydraulics Online is completely independent, so we can choose the best components for the job and, most importantly, we can be very competitive on price.”
As well as developing a range of power packs for Hydraulics Online, it isn’t uncommon for the two businesses to take a brief from the end customer together in order to work closely on the design stages of a project.
“When a client has an unusual requirement, Hydraulics Online will do the initial problem-solving for them, then we can do the bespoke engineering side behind it. Combining the products and product knowledge of Hydraulics Online and integrating that with our bespoke solutions is the best of both worlds,” says Martin.
A Very Unusual Requirement
This teamwork paid dividends on a very usual job in early 2017. A client approached Hydraulics Online for a very particular set of requirements for operating an extruding machine. It needed to run a very large cylinder very slowly at the same time as a hydraulic motor was required to turn quickly. Martin says: “it was the two extremes of hydraulics in a single system”.
The client had a very specific set of requirements, so it was important that all three companies worked together so an appropriate solution could be offered.

Despite the complexity and unconventional specification, the close working relationship enabled Hydraulics Online and Fluidlink to design and propose a solution within two weeks, with just another four weeks required to manufacture, build and deliver it once approved.
The finished solution included both a 11Kw motor coupled with a large 18cc pump capable of producing a flow rate of 27L per minute at 200 bar pressure, and a 0.25Kw with a 0.166cc pump delivering a flow rate of 0.01L per minute under 200 bar of pressure, plus a 100L tank and a single power pack on a large frame that fit the client’s exact dimensions. This involved a bespoke distribution manifold and a bespoke control manifold built by Fluidlink Hydraulics, so that all aspects could be controlled, including setting the speed and torque on the motors.
Martin says: “We love working with Hydraulics Online. Their technical knowledge is excellent. They have all sorts of challenging enquiries which makes life very interesting. Because of our combined expertise, when we work with them, we know we are going to be able to push the boundaries a bit and think outside the box.”

When the Royal Shakespeare Company staged Wendy and Peter Pan in its Royal Shakespeare Theatre in 2013 and 2015, the whole team wanted to create a magical, beautiful experience for its family audiences.
Control Systems for Heavy Lifting
Gill Leefe is Control Systems Engineer at the RSC in Stratford and was responsible for the control of the hydraulic system. Gill says: “There are important safety considerations when using hydraulic equipment and we have to be very careful, but they can be very useful in the theatre. We do have our own mains power system for the hydraulics and we make use of them when there are big, heavy things to move.”
For the production of Wendy and Peter Pan, the hydraulics were used to move large pieces of set, to startling effect.
Gill explains: “While Wendy is looking for the lost boys, the stage begins to rise, revealing Tinkerbell underneath. In the space the elevated stage creates, another piece of set rises to reveal the hidey-hole where the Lost Boys live and eleven boys dancing on the set.”
The two separate controllers were linked together to a central control panel. With one actor strapped to one element of the moving set and more rising with the second moving element of the set, it was vital that the hydraulic systems were in perfect working order and fully safety tested.
“Sometimes I operated that show,” says Gill, “and from where I sat I could see the front row of kids. When the stage began to lift up they would jump out of their seats, wondering what was going on. Then I could see the expressions of wonder on their faces; they were really excited. It was an absolutely brilliant moment.”
The equipment was reused in 2016 at London’s Barbican theatre in the production of King Lear starring Antony Sher – following which it was returned to Stratford upon Avon for reconditioning. Gill needed to replace the Dual Driver Multi-Function Proportional Valve and a quick online search showed that Hydraulics Online could help.
“The team at Hydraulics Online were really efficient and friendly,” says Gill. “Sometimes we are not the easiest people to deal with because we can generate a lot of paperwork; taking on a new supplier can be a lengthy process for us, but Hydraulics Online worked very quickly and made it really easy for us.”

The pain of setting up a new supplier did prompt Gill to check with existing suppliers as to whether they could supply a suitable part. Gill explains: “I did call around looking for alternative quotes, but nobody could match Hydraulics Online on price.”
The part arrived in good time, ahead of the stated lead time, and Gill says she was very impressed with the service: “Hydraulics Online were very efficient and pleasant to deal with throughout and their price is the best. Back to our new customer down in Antarctica…
When we say we trade the world over, we aren’t joking! A recent enquiry came from a new customer in Antarctica, who sent the team a photo of a hydraulic pump. Not knowing what they wanted and with the identification plate missing from the unit, the team were tasked with finding out what type of hydraulic pump it was. We never back away from a challenge!
Surely enough, the team identified the pump as a Denison P Series tandem pump and were able to quote on a seal kit to needed to undertake some important repairs on the pump; the pump came from a pristine environment into which the unit had been leaking – a repair was essential.
But sometimes a repair may just not be feasible, providing poor or unreliable performance at best. If this is what we find, we will always contact you to explain why and to quote for a brand new replacement pump.

Take, for example, the case of this overseas company looking for Parker pumps for one of their vessels…
The company, whose vessels are used in offshore operations for one of the largest oil producers in the world, first contacted Hydraulic Online when they needed a number of Parker pumps – Denison T6C Series vane pumps – for one of their vessels.

Denison vane pumps remain operational at pressures exceeding 4,500 pounds per square inch, differ in size from 0.35 cubic inches to 16 cubic inches, and in displacement from 1 to 250 gallons per minute. These Parker pumps, considered to be some of the toughest components in the industry, are often recognised by their distinctive double-lip design, where the vane is in contact with the cam ring at two points as opposed to one, which is the single-lip design. Anyway, back to our customer… we quoted for the T6 Parker Pumps (and some Veljan vane pumps as well), apparently beating off competition from another overseas supplier local to our customer. And the rest is history…
But it doesn’t stop there… the customer was so impressed with our service, that they immediately asked us to quote for a replacement double servo pump that to be used on the bow thruster system on another one of their vessels. Thrusters are mounted to the bow of the vessel to make docking easier; they enable the ship to turn to port or starboard side, without having to use the main propulsion mechanism which involves some forward motion for turning.
As is often the case, the customer sent in a photo (shown here) and asked our technical team to identify their existing pump (Commercial Hydraulics P31 series, Parker pumps) and quote for a replacement unit… which we did. The customer received their replacement pumps within a week of placing their order and quickly had the vessel back servicing oil rigs in the North Sea!
